Nine illegal fishers apprehended by Navy

Nine (09) persons who engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Norway island in Trincomalee, were apprehended by Navy, on 14th August 2019.

Accordingly, these persons who engaged in illegal fishing with banned nets were apprehended by Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol carried out at the seas around Norway island. A dinghy, an OBM and a banned net were also taken into Naval custody.

The suspects have been identified as residents of Kinniya area, aged from 22 to 46. These suspects along with dinghy, OBM, net and other fishing gears were handed over to the office of the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for further investigation.

Since the using of unauthorized fishing nets cause the decrease the fish resource, SL Navy is vigilant to avert such illegal acts in order to protect the marine resources around the island.
