Navy apprehends 04 Indian fishers for poaching in northern waters

Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 04 Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler belonging to them for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters on 09th September 2019.

The apprehension was made by the Northern Naval Command, during a patrol conducted in the sea area northwest of the Kovilam Point. The group of Indian fishermen were poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters by the time the apprehension was made. Subsequently, the apprehended fishermen were escorted to SLNS ‘Uththara’ and the seized trawler was brought to SLNS ‘Elara’

The group of fishermen are expected to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward action, after a medical examination. Further, as a result of its continuous operations, the Navy has been able to curb illegal fishing activities of the Indian fishers in Sri Lankan territorial waters.
