Navy finds 65kg haul of beedi leaves in seas off Kachchativu Island

During a search conducted in the sea area off the Kachchativu Island, the Navy found a 65kg haul of beedi leaves on 23rd September 2019.

The Northern Naval Command, during a search carried out in the sea area off the Kachchativu Island, had spotted a suspicious package drifting in northern waters. When searched, there were 07 small parcels of beedi leaves inside the package. The 07 parcels contained 65kg of beedi leaves in total.

It is believed that the drug traffickers might have left behind the package, in fear of continuous naval patrols. The seized stock of beedi leaves will be handed over to the Jaffna Customs for onward action.

Meanwhile, over 34,000kg of Beedi leaves have been found by the Navy this year alone and the Navy will continue to tighten its grip on such activities taking place in the waters around the island.
