Nine persons used banned nets for fishing held by Navy

SL Navy apprehended nine (09) persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets at Poonadi sea area in Trincomalee, on 2^nd October 2019.

Accordingly, Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol conducted at Poonadi sea area in Trincomalee, apprehended these suspects who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets. The suspects are residents of Mawadechenai and Eaechalampattu areas in the ages between 24 to 53. Navy also seized two dinghies, a banned net, two OBMs and some fishing gears. Apprehended persons along with the dinghies, net, OBMs and other fishing gears were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee.

Since the using of unauthorized fishing nets cause to decrease the fish resource, SL Navy is vigilant to avert such illegal acts in order to protect the marine resources around the island.
