Old prison building at Tangalle handed over to Navy

The handing over of the old prison building at Tangalle to the Sri Lanka Navy was taken place on 30th October 2019.

The letter of acquisition of this building constructed during the Dutch period which is situated in Tangalle fort, was handed over to the Commander Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral Kassapa Paul by the Divisional Secretary, Tangalle Mrs. Kaushalya Galappaththi at the prison premises.

Few buildings which were inside the fort constructed by Hollanders in 1775 in Tangalle area, were transformed to a prison in the middle of 19th century. This prison existed unchanged to 3rd November 2017 till it was transferred to Agunakolapalessa.

After the acquisition, Navy expects to maintain this building preserving its archeological value under the administration of SLNS “Ruhuna” in Tangalle.
