Navy holds six persons engaged in illegal fishing with banned nets

Six (06) persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets at the seas off Back Bay in Trincomalee, were apprehended by Navy during a patrol on 3rd November 2019.

Accordingly, these suspects who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets were apprehended during a patrol conducted by Eastern Naval Command. The suspects are residents of Nelaweli area in the ages between 22 to 56. Navy also seized a dinghy, an OBM, 30kg of illegal fish catch and 225m long unauthorized fishing net.

Apprehended persons along with the dinghy, unauthorized net, OBM, fish catch and other fishing gears were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee through Department of Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

Marine resources are harmed by illegal means of fishing in this nature and Navy is always on alert to turn away these activities to preserve fish and other maritime resources for future.
