In a joint operation carried out today (05th December), Sri Lanka Navy along with Sri Lanka Police were able to foil a human smuggling attempt and apprehend the suspects.

As a result of Sri Lanka Navy’s vigilance and dedication towards countering human smuggling from the country, the joint raid was carried out at dawn around Negombo area, where the suspects were identified while travelling towards Negombo in a van in an attempt to migrate to New Zealand via sea, illegally. The 16 suspects along with the driver of the van were arrested.

The suspects, aged between 19 to 46 have been identified as residents of Walachchenei and the apprehended, along with the van will be investigated further by Negombo Police. Further, Navy and Police have extended their investigation in order to locate the smuggler who is responsible.

Presently, immigration laws are stringent across the globe and it such illegal methods of immigration can only result in people falling into traps of illegal human smugglers and spending their fortune on such scams and ultimately getting arrested and jailed. Further any such plans of illegal immigration via sea will not come to fruition since the watchful eyes of Sri Lanka Navy are vigilant across the territorial waters.
