Navy holds three persons engaged in illegal fishing

Three (03) persons who engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Hikkaduwa were apprehended by the Navy in coordination with the office of the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Galle on 22nd December 2019.

Accordingly, these three persons who were using illegal lights for fishing in the seas off Hikkaduwa, were apprehended during an operation carried out by the Navy in coordination with the office of the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Galle to avert the destruction of marine resources caused by the illegal means of fishing. The suspects have been identified as the residents of Ambalangoda, Dodanduwa and Patuwaka areas. A dinghy, Wallam (Traditional craft) and 14 LED bulbs used by them were also taken into Naval custody and those were handed over to the office of the Fisheries Inspector-Hikkaduwa.

Further, the marine resources around the island is destroyed by the illegal means such as banned nets, explosive used by a limited number of fisher folk and Navy is vigilant to protect the marine resources averting these illegal activities.
