Navy assists apprehension of person for engaging in illegal fishing

The Navy, in coordination with the Fisheries Office of Galle, apprehended a person (01) for engaging in illegal fishing in seas off Galle today (07th January 2020).

The Navy has been conducting regular operations in waters around the island to prevent depletion of fish and ocean resources, caused by illegal fishing practices. During a similar operation conducted with the assistance of the Fisheries Office of Galle, the Navy has spotted a suspicious vessel and apprehended the person aboard for engaging in fishing without valid license. The accused has been identified as a resident of Bataduwa in Galle, aged 24. Along with the suspect, a dinghy and an outboard motor have also been taken into custody.

The Fisheries Inspector of Galle is conducting further investigation with regard to the apprehended person and other seized items.
