Navy apprehends foreign couple for engaging in spearfishing in Rumassala

Navy apprehended two foreigners who were engaging in an illegal practice of spearfishing in Rumassala on 24th January 2020.

On receipt of information to the Southern Naval Command, the foreign couple was taken into custody off Rumassala beach. Along with them 01 spear gun and 01 pair of diving fins were also seized by the Navy. Further investigation revealed that the suspects are Ukrainian nationals. The couple along with the fishing gear were handed over to the Habaraduwa Police for onward investigation.

As a result of illegal activities performed by a handful of tourists who visit Sri Lanka, the marine ecosystem is under threat. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy is watchful and constantly working towards protecting the marine resources as they are an essential component of the Earth's ecosystem.
