Navy apprehends 11 Indian fishers for poaching in northern waters

The Navy on 27th January 2020 apprehended11 Indian fishers, along with a fishing trawler belonging to them, for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The Navy has been conducting regular operations to prevent illegal fishing practices and wide ranging illegal activities taking place in Sri Lankan territorial waters. Accordingly, the Navy on routine patrol seized an Indian fishing trawler poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters off the Delft Island. The eleven (11) Indian fishermen aboard were also taken into naval custody.

Meanwhile, the apprehended Indian fishermen were escorted to SLNS Elara and they are due to be handed over for onward legal action, after a medical test.

Due to routine patrols conducted by the Navy in island’s waters, the number of Indian fishing vessels trespassing the Sri Lankan territorial waters for poaching has comparatively reduced. Further, the Navy will continue to employ its resources efficiently and efficiently for the protection of local fishermen and fishery resources.
