More mangroves planted by Navy to protect mangrove environment

The Sri Lanka Navy launched another mangrove plantation campaign under its Mangrove Conservation programme, on 31st January 2020.

About 2500 mangrove saplings which will provide numerous benefits to the marine environment in future, were planted during the campaign. Under the directives of Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kapila Samaraweera, a large group of naval personnel form SLNS Elara, Uththara and Agbo in the Northern Naval Command took part in this programme conducted at the Ponnalai lagoon area in Jaffna.

Apart from the mangrove conservation projects, the Navy has been conducting a wide range of other projects such as beach cleaning, turtle conservation and coral conservation which make a significant contribution to the protection of the marine ecosystem of the country. These projects are steaming ahead under the direct supervision of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
