Navy nabs 03 persons for engaging in illegal fishing activities

The Navy managed to nab 03 persons for engaging in illegal fishing activities in Sinnakuduirippu fisheries harbour on 27th February 2020.

The Navy has been conducting regular patrols in island’s waters for the preservation of fishery and aquatic resources belonging to the country. Accordingly, a group of naval personnel in the Northwestern Naval Command had nabbed these 03 persons who were engaging in night diving to catch fish, during a patrol conducted in Sinnakuduirippu fisheries harbour. The suspects were held while they were returning to the harbour premises. Along with the suspects 12kg of illegally caught fish, a dinghy, diving equipment and other fishing gear have been taken into custody.

The apprehended persons are residents of Palliwasathurei and Kalpitiya, from 43 to 50 years of age. The suspects together with seized items belonging to them were handed over to the Fisheries Operations Officer of Kalpitiya for onward investigation.
