Navy apprehends person in possession of explosives used for fishing and Kerala cannabis

During a search conducted in the beach area of Poduwakattu on 31st March 2020, the Navy apprehended a person in possession of explosives used for illegal fishing. The suspect also had Kerala cannabis with him as the apprehension was made.

Apart from directly involving in coordinated efforts following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Navy has been continuing its operations to curb illegal activities taking place across the island. During a similar operation, a group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command had detected a suspicious dinghy in the beach area of Poduwakattu. During further investigations the Navy managed to apprehend a person at the dinghy in possession of 43g of Kerala cannabis (in 38 small packets), 03 water gel sticks, safety fuses and 03 non-electric detonators. The suspect together with the belongings was subsequently taken into naval custody.

The suspect was identified as an 18 year old resident of Pulmoddai area. The accused along with Kerala cannabis, explosive items, dinghy and other fishing gear were handed over to the Kuchchaveli Police for onward investigation.
