Navy apprehends two persons with explosive used for illegal fishing

Navy apprehended two (02) persons with explosive used for illegal fishing, during a patrol carried out in Kuchchaweli area on 01st April 2020.

Since, illegal fishing practice is extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystem, as the explosion often destroys the underlying habitat that supports the fish, Sri Lanka Navy is conducting continuous operations in waters around the island to curb such illegal acts at all times. Accordingly, a team of Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, while on patrol in Kuchchaweli area spotted a suspicious motor bike and searched it. During the search, four (04) charges made up of gelignite possessed by the two riders on motorbike, were found and they along with explosive and motor bike were taken into naval custody.

The suspects aged 18 and 37, are residents of Wadalikulam area in Kuchchaweli. They along with the explosive and motor bike were handed over to the Kuchchaweli Police for onward investigation.
