Navy holds five persons engaged in illegal fishing with banned nets

Five (05) persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets were apprehended by Navy during a patrol carried out at Udappuwa area in the Mundalama lagoon, on 21st April 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy constantly conducts patrols to curb the illegal means of fishing in order to preserve marine resources. As such extension, these suspects who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets were apprehended in search to a suspicious canoe during a patrol conducted at Udappuwa area in the Mundalama lagoon by a team of naval personnel attached to Northwestern Naval Command. Five (05) suspects, the canoe and banned nets used by them were taken into custody.

The suspects are residents of Konthanthivu and Udappuwa areas in the ages between 20 to 59. Apprehended persons along with the canoe and unauthorized nets were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries-Puttalam for further action
