Four persons (04) apprehended with cannabis in two coordinated operations conducted by Navy and STF

During two coordinated operations conducted in Beliatta and Thanamalwila areas on 15th May 2020 the Navy and the Police Special Task Force (STF) managed to apprehend three (03) persons with Kerala cannabis and a woman with local cannabis.

Despite the outbreak of COVID - 19 in the country, the Sri Lanka Navy is embarking on the national task of suppressing the smuggling of drugs, by conducting a number of anti-drug operations both on land and at sea. Going in line with these operations, a group of naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command, along with the STF in Tangalle, nabbed three persons with 900g of Kerala cannabis being transported for sale, in Beliatta area.

In another operation in Thanamalwila, Kahakurullanpelessa area, the Navy and Ambalantota Police Special Task Force apprehended a woman with about 2kg and 500g of local cannabis made ready to be sold. The raiding party also took into custody an eclectic scale and found about Rs. 600,000 earned by selling cannabis.

The 03 suspects apprehended in Beliatta were identified as residents of Modarawana and Pallaththara areas, from 37 to 39 years of age. Meanwhile the woman held in Thanamalwila is found to be a resident of the same area, aged 30. The accused along with cannabis and rest of the items were handed over to the Police stations of Beliatta and Thanamalwila for onward investigation.
