Navy holds fishing craft with explosives used for illegal fishing

The Navy recovered explosives used for illegal fishing in a dinghy, while conducting a search operation at the Erakkandi beach area in Trincomalee on 01st July 2020.

In order to preserve the fishery resources in the territorial waters of the island, Navy has been conducting frequent operations. Accordingly, during a special search operation at the Erakkandi beach area, Navy had spotted a person who was hastily reaching the landward from a dinghy. Subsequently, the naval personnel searched the said dinghy on suspicion and found 03 chargers prepared for illegal fishing. Six (06) water gel sticks, 03 safety fuse and 03 non electric detonators were used for chargers. Accordingly, the dinghy, explosives and rest of the fishing gear were taken into naval custody.

The dinghy, explosives and rest of the fishing gear seized by the naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, were handed over to the Kuchchaveli Police for onward investigation.
