Sailors roll up their sleeves for World Ocean Day beach cleanup

In celebration of World Ocean Day (08th June), the Sri Lanka Navy undertook a beach cleanup operation at the picturesque Arugam Bay on 06th June 2024. The theme for this year’s World Ocean Day is ‘Awaken New Depths’.

Following the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Sri Lanka Navy is actively involved in beach cleaning programmes across all naval commands. The recent initiative was yet another milestone of the timely project, organised by the Southeastern Naval Command, under the supervision of Commander Southeastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Thushara Karunathunga.

A group of senior and junior officers and sailors from the Southeastern Naval Command, officers from Arugam Bay STF, officers of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, residents and a group of tourists also joined this effort.
