Navy apprehends 09 persons for fishing using unauthorized nets in eastern waters

The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 09 persons for their involvement in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets and without valid license, during a search operation conducted in the sea area of Elephant Island, Trincomalee on 15th April 2024. The operation also led to the seizure of 02 dinghies used for these illegal activities.

The Sri Lanka Navy remains vigilant and conducts operations to combat illegal fishing in its sea and coastal areas, with a view to supporting legal fishing activities.

In continuation of these efforts, Naval Dockyard in the Eastern Naval Command conducted a search operation in the sea area of Elephant Island, where the suspicious dinghies were spotted. After conducting further search of the dinghies, naval personnel apprehended 09 individuals who were involved in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets and without valid license. Moreover, 02 dinghies and unauthorized fishing nets used for these illegal acts were also held during this operation.

The persons held in this operation were identified as residents of Kinniya, who are from 22 to 54 years of age. The individuals were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Cod Bay for onward legal action. Meanwhile, the seized items have been kept in the naval custody, until further legal proceedings get underway.
