Six (6) persons with illegally harvested sea cucumbers apprehended in Silawathura

A special search operation conducted by the Navy off Kayakkuli, Silawathura on 25th December 2024 led to the apprehension of 6 suspects who were illegally harvesting sea cucumbers. The operation resulted in the seizure of 1205 sea cucumbers and 2 dinghies.

The Sri Lanka Navy carries out regular search operations and patrols in the coastal and sea areas around the island, with a view to preventing illegal fishing practices.

In line with ongoing efforts, SLNS Therapuththa in the Northwestern Command apprehended these 6 individuals in the sea area of Kayakkuli, for harvesting sea cucumbers without a valid fishing pass. The operation also led to the confiscation of 1205 sea cucumbers and 2 dinghies.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Kalpitiya, Mandalakuda, Kalpanthinegama, Anawasala, Sinnakudirippu and Haijarawaththa areas, aged between 24 and 52. The suspects together with 1205 sea cucumbers and 2 trawlers were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for onward legal action.
