Navy apprehends 02 persons for illegal transportation of sea cucumbers in Venpuravinagar, Jaffna
The Sri Lanka Navy on 20th January 2025 apprehended 02 persons for illegal transportation of sea cucumbers in the coastal vicinity of Venpuravinagar, Jaffna, without valid license. The search operation also led to the seizure of a dinghy and 130 sea cucumbers.
The Navy conducts regular operations in the coastal and sea areas of the island in order to suppress illegal fishing activities performed by people with scant regard towards responsible fishing practices.
In continuation of these efforts, the search operation was mounted by SLNS Kanchadewa in the Northern Naval Command, deploying small craft. Upon interception of the suspicious dinghy in the coastal area of Venpuravinagar, the 02 suspects were apprehended for their involvement in transferring 130 sea cucumbers without valid license.
The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Allayipiddi, aged 34 and 45. Those 02 suspects together with sea cucumbers and the dinghy were handed over to the Velani Fisheries Inspector for onward legal action.
