Navy intercepts local fishing trawler smuggling massive haul of methamphetamine and heroin, with 07 suspects
Acting on credible information, the Sri Lanka Navy launched a special operation on the high seas on the morning of 05 Apr 25, apprehending seven (07) suspects along with a local multi-day fishing trawler, believed to be involved in smuggling of narcotics. Subsequently, the intercepted trawler was brought to Dikkowita Harbour, where a thorough inspection was carried out with the assistance of Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) experts, leading to uncover approximately 191kg and 752g of heroin and 671kg and 452g of methamphetamine (ice). The consignment which had been meticulously hidden in the trawler, was handed over to the PNB for onward legal action.
On the morning of 05 Apr 25, the Commander of the Navy conducted an inspection of the seized haul of narcotics at Dikkowita Harbour. During the visit, he commended the naval personnel involved in the operation, acknowledging their efforts in ensuring its successful execution.
In a move to uphold the government’s vision of “An Honourable Life - A Safer Country”, the Sri Lanka Navy has stepped up its operations to protect national security and ensure public safety. With a sharp focus on dismantling illegal maritime activities, especially smuggling of narcotics, the Navy is leaving no stone unturned. Leveraging strong partnerships with local and international intelligence agencies, maritime stakeholders, and law enforcement entities, the Navy is tightening its grip on criminal networks operating through Sri Lankan waters.
Speaking on this occasion, the Commander of the Navy stressed that with the collective efforts of all stakeholders dedicated to national security, no illegal substances, particularly narcotics, will be allowed to enter the country via sea routes, as they threaten both national security and social stability. He also highlighted the Sri Lanka Navy's ongoing commitment to safeguarding the fishing community by providing essential support and relief. Besides, he firmly stated that smuggling of narcotics disguised as fishing operations, or any attempt to aid and abet such activities, will be met with strict action. Moreover, he assured that the Navy will continue its dedicated operations to detect and apprehend those involved in these illegal activities.
