Navy thwarts gold smuggling attempt seizing approx. 08kg and 960g of gold with 02 suspects in Talaimannar
The Sri Lanka Navy thwarted a gold smuggling attempt in Urumalei, Talaimannar on 21 Apr 25, seizing approximately 08kg and 960g of gold believed to be destined for a foreign country via sea. The search operation also resulted in the apprehension of 02 suspects and 01 traditional boat (Theppam) in connection to the incident.
The Navy is maintaining vigilant surveillance of the island's coastal areas, carrying out regular patrols and search operations to prevent illegal activities, particularly the smuggling of goods via sea routes.
On receipt of credible information by SLNS Thammanna the search operation was mounted in the beach vicinity of Urumalei. Meanwhile, the suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Urumalei area.
The suspects together with the gold stash and the traditional boat were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Kankasanthurei for onward legal action.
