Kerala cannabis valued over Rs. 120 million seized with 03 suspects in northern waters
A search operation conducted by the Navy off the Eluvativu Island, Jaffna on 07 May 25 resulted in the seizure of about 301kg and 150g of Kerala cannabis. The operation also led to the apprehension of 03 suspects and a dinghy (01) in connection to the smuggling racket.
On receipt of credible information by the Northern Naval Command, the search was mounted by SLNS Elara. In the operation, Naval personnel intercepted a suspicious dinghy and recovered approx. 301kg and 150g of Kerala cannabis in139 packages stuffed in 08 sacks being smuggled. Consequently, the consignment of Kerala cannabis, the dinghy and 03 suspects were taken into Naval custody.
The gross street value of the stock of Kerala cannabis held in this operation is believed to exceed Rs. 120 million.
The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Oluthuduwai in Mannar and Jaffna areas, from 43 to 58 years of age. The suspects, together with Kerala cannabis and the dinghy were handed over to the Kayts Police for onward legal action.
