Relentless naval surveillance takes hold of 91kg of dried ginger and footwear attempted to be smuggled
During a search operation conducted in the sea area of Baththalangunduwa, Kalpitiya on 03 Jul 25, the Navy took hold of 91kg (wet weight) of dried ginger and 238 pairs of footwear attempted to smuggle.
The Sri Lanka Navy maintains constant vigilance, carrying out patrols and search operations along the island's coastline to curb the smuggling of illegal goods. These efforts help mitigate economic threats and national security risks linked to such illicit activities.
In a further crackdown on smuggling activities, personnel from the Rapid Action Boat Squadron of the Northwestern Naval Command carried out the search operation off Baththalangunduwa. During the mission, naval personnel recovered five suspicious sacks, containing 91kg (wet weight) of dried ginger and 238 pairs of footwear. It is suspected that smugglers may have abandoned the consignment at sea, unable to bring it ashore due to heightened naval surveillance in the area.
The stock of ginger and footwear held in this operation was handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for onward legal action.
