Thirty-one (31) persons apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing

In separate search operations conducted by the Navy from 20 to 30 Jun 25, thirty-one (31) individuals involved in various illegal fishing activities were apprehended in multiple locations in Trincomalee. The operations also made way for the seizure of 06 dinghies employed for these illegal practices.

These operations were conducted by the Eastern Naval Command in Sallikovil, Sallitivu, Bolder Point and Malaimundal coastal areas in Trincomalee. The individuals were held for their involvement in fishing with unauthorized nets, light-coarse fishing and night diving to harvest sea cucumbers. Apart from the 06 dinghies, 11 unauthorized fishing nets were also seized in these operations.

The suspects along with fishing boats and unauthorized gear held in these separate operations were handed over to the offices of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Trincomalee, Mankerni and Echchalampaththu as well as Uppuweli Police station for legal action.
