Navy nabs 12 individuals in crackdown on illegal fishing practices

In separate operations conducted by the Navy from 10 to 19 Aug 25, twelve (12) individuals involved in various illegal fishing activities were apprehended along with 03 dinghies in multiple locations across the island.

The Sri Lanka Navy carries out regular operations to curb the harmful effects of illegal fishing practices on the marine ecosystem, while also supporting the promotion of sustainable and lawful fishing activities.

In the coastal areas of Marble Point, Kinniya, Irakkandi, Flag Staff Point and Walapadukuda in Trincomalee, the Eastern Naval Command nabbed these 12 individuals for their involvement in fishing with unauthorized nets, explosives and engagement in illegal diving.

The suspects along with dinghies and unauthorized gear held in these separate operations were handed over to the offices of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Trincomalee, Cod Bay, Kinniya and Kuchchaveli for legal proceedings.
