Seventy eight (78) persons collared for involvement in illegal fishing
In separate operations in the past two weeks, the Sri Lanka Navy apprehended seventy-eight (78) individuals engaged in illegal fishing activities across the island's waters from 01 to 15 September 2025.
The operations, led by the Eastern, Northern, and Southeastern Naval Commands, resulted in the seizure of thirty-five (35) dinghies, one (01) multi-day fishing trawler, unauthorized fishing nets, explosives, and equipment used for prohibited methods such as light coarse fishing.
The Sri Lanka Navy carries out regular operations to curb the harmful effects of illegal fishing practices on the marine ecosystem, while also supporting the promotion of sustainable and lawful fishing activities.
The operations covered a vast area, including Kallarawa, Valaithottam, Coconut Point, Flag Staff Point, Norway Island, Bolder Point, Kokilai, Red Rock, Thuduwa, Chilawaththa, Jayanagar, Sallimunai, Kuchchaveli, Adukkupadu, and Kinniya, in Trincomalee, Chudikulam and Kaddaikadu in Jaffna as well as the sea area from Karaithivu to Ninthavur.
The persons along with unauthorized items and fishing boats held in these operations were handed over to the respective Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department offices in Trincomalee, Sampoor, Verugal, Cod Bay, Kuchchaweli, Kinniya, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, and Jaffna for subsequent legal proceedings.
