Navy renders assistance to bring ashore a critically ill crew member of MV IYO for medical attention
With the coordination of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, the Sri Lanka Navy promptly brought ashore a critically ill crew member of the cargo vessel MV IYO, sailing in the Eastern seas off Trincomalee, and transferred him to the Trincomalee General Hospital for treatment on 26 Oct 25.
The MV IYO, a Panama-flagged cargo vessel en route from Singapore to Chennai, India, had onboard a Filipino crew member who had become critically ill due to severe abdominal pain. Meanwhile, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo at the Navy Headquarters was alerted by the vessel, requesting naval assistance to bring ashore the crew member to provide urgent medical attention.
Responding immediately, the Navy dispatched a craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command, along with a medical team, to the location of the vessel to transfer the patient ashore for treatment.
Subsequently, initial first aid was administered to stabilize the patient and facilitated his transfer. Having brought him to Trincomalee Harbour, the patient was rushed to the Trincomalee General Hospital for further treatment.
This life-saving mission underscores the Sri Lanka Navy's unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea. Coordinating with the MRCC Colombo, the Navy remains on constant vigil to provide assistance to the maritime and fishing communities in distress within Sri Lanka's Search and Rescue Region.
