Navy assists search for missing fisherman off Trincomalee

The Sri Lanka Navy launched a search and rescue(SAR) operation, with the assistance of the local fishing community, following a distress message received on Friday( 03 July 2026) to locate a fisherman who went missing after a fishing boat reportedly overturned in the seas off Trincomalee.

Three fishermen from Veeranagar, Cod Bay area had set out for fishing on Thursday( 02 July ) evening.

Two of the fishermen had reportedly later managed to return to their dinghy before alerting the Sri Lanka Navy about the incident.

The missing fisherman is believed to be the owner of the dinghy.

The naval search operation is underway with Inshore Patrol Craft and Navy divers along with assistance of the local fishing communities.

Investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Trincomalee Harbour Police.
