Navy clears Wakwella bridge to restore water flow

The Sri Lanka Navy, together with the Irrigation Department, cleared debris obstructing water flow through the Wakwella Bridge over the Gin River in Galle on 24 September 2026.

The operation was carried following heavy rainfall caused by adverse weather conditions affecting the island. Emergencies of this kind are often attended by the Southern Naval Command, working alongside relevant agencies, particularly when debris collects beneath the bridge causing obstruction.

The clearing operation was conducted under the supervision of Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral HNS Perera, with personnel from the Command Diving and Salvage Unit, Special Boat Squadron and Rapid Action Boat Squadron attached to SLNS Dakshina, together with officials from the Irrigation Department.
