Navy Seva Vanitha Unit organizes largest ever blood donation campaign

Blood reserves of Blood Banks in hospitals across the country and National Blood Transfusion Service have plummeted due to the pandemic situation where donors find it difficult to donate blood. Against this backdrop, there have been a number of requests for blood donation from many hospitals including the National Blood Transfusion Service and Apeksha Hospital.

Responding to this urgency, the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit (NSVU) under the directives of its President, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne, organized a blood donation campaign in the Western, North Central, Northwestern, Northern, Southeastern and Southern Naval Commands on 24th May 2021 from 0900 to 1800 hrs. The timely initiative organized in parallel with the forthcoming Vesak Poya Day was well supported by the Directorate of Health Services respective Blood Banks in each Naval Command. The programmes were attended by 1611 naval personnel who were willing to donate blood for this great cause.

The inauguration of the blood donation drive was formally marked at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium, SLNS Parakrama under the auspices of NSVU President, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne and with the attendance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne. The event which was held giving pride and place to religious rites was organized adhering to COVID-19 protocols for the arrest of the transmission of the pandemic.

The event was also attended by Senior Supervising Officer NSVU, Commodore US Senaviratne, Deputy Area Commander Western Naval Area, Commodore PS De Silva, Commanding Officer SLNS Parakrama, Captain HIA Gunawardena, Command Medical Officer (West) Surgeon Commander MVS Athukorala, officers, lady officers and the staff members of NSVU.
