Navy Inter-command Rugby Tournament concludes with spectacular show of skill

The Navy Inter-command Rugby Tournament -2023 came to an exhilarating close at the rugby ground of SLNS Uththara, showcasing the exceptional sporting prowess of naval personnel. The three-day event, held from 05th to 07th July 2023, witnessed intense competition among various naval commands, with the Training Command emerging as the men's champions and the Western Naval Command clinching the women's championship.

The finals, held on 07th July, witnessed an impressive display of skill and determination by the teams. In the men's championship, the Training Command dominated the game, securing a comprehensive victory over the Northern Naval Command with a scoreline of 47-00. The Eastern Naval Command secured the third place in the tournament, adding to the competitive spirit on display.

The women's final was a closely contested match between the Western Naval Command and the Northern Naval Command. In a thrilling encounter, the Western Naval Command emerged victorious, defeating their opponents 10-05. The Training Command secured the third place in the women's championship, further highlighting their sporting capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Naval Fleet Command secured the Plate Championship, while the North Central Naval Command emerged as the winners of the Bowl Championship, adding to the diversity of accomplishments throughout the tournament.

In recognition of their remarkable contributions, individual players were honoured with prestigious awards. Accordingly, Chief Petty Officer LPGD Karunarathna of the Western Naval Command was awarded the title of the oldest player in the tournament. Officer Cadet KA Kulathunga of the Training Command was named the Player of the Tournament in the men's category. In the women's category, Woman Ordinary Seaman KCD Fernando from the Western Naval Command was bestowed with the Player of the Tournament award.

The final day of the tournament was graced by Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Aruna Tennekoon. Deputy Area Commander of Northern Naval Area, Commodore N Ranasinghe, Chairman of the Navy Rugby Pool, Commodore Sanath Pitigala, senior officers and a group of naval personnel were also present on this occasion.
