Navy bags a bunch of medals in National Boxing Championship -2023

Navy boxers bagged a bunch of medals in the 96th BASL National Boxing Championship -2023, held at the Royal MAS Arena, Colombo on 17th January 2024.

Thirty-six (36) male and female boxers, representing the Navy, took part in a tournament that drew top-tier boxers from prominent clubs island wide.

In men’s events Leading Seaman KMCK Karunanayake won a gold medal in the under 92kg weight class. Meanwhile, Leading Physical Training Instructor WMJKI Ariyarathna won a silver medal in the under 75kg weight class. In the same weight class, Able Seaman RGUS Rupassara won two bronze medals. Moreover, Leading Seaman HN Thilakarathna and Leading Seaman AMTS Adhikari won silver medals in the under 63.5kg and 67kg weight classes respectively. Further, Steward AS Priyankara (under 54kg weight class) and Able Infantryman SI Ranmal and Able Seaman AMGI Bandara (under 51kg weight class) won bronze medals. Competed in the under 48kg weight class, Leading Emgineering Mechanic GKGWU Kumara won a bronze medal and Able Seaman EHDC De Silva, contested in the over 92kg weight class won a bronze medal.

In women’s events, Woman Stores Assistant KMMJ Konara (under 48kg weight class), Woman Able Seaman RMYDB Menike (under 54kg weight class) and Woman Writer RMSS Rathnayake (under 52 weight class) won bronze medals for the Navy.

The Secretary of Defence, General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd), President of Sri Lanka Boxing Association, Mr. Dian Gomes and a group of athletes from the boxing clubs were present on this occasion.
