Inter-command Badminton Championship – 2024 concludes in Welisara

The Inter-command Badminton Championship - 2024 was held at the Commander Parakrama Samaraweera Memorial Indoor Sports Complex in Welisara from 05th to 09th March 2024. The prize awarding ceremony held on 09th March was graced by Director General Budget and Finance, Rear Admiral Manjula Dissanayake.

The Training Command crowned both men's and women’s champions in the Inter-command Badminton Championship and the North Central Naval Command secured the men’s runner up title. Meanwhile, the women's runner up title was won by the Western Naval Command.

In the men's novice category, the championship was won by Leading Physical Training Instructor SPJR Rathnayake and the runner-up position was secured by Able Physical Training Instructor BS Samarasinghe. Meanwhile, Woman Recruit JAUK Jayakody won the women’s novice championship and its runner-up position was won by Woman Able Physical Training Instructor WGNS Amarasinghe.

In the open men’s doubles the championship was clinched by Commander JAN De Silva and Commander KKR Rathnayake. The runner-up slot of the event was won by Commander CMDA Chandrasekara and Sub Lieutenant HOT De Silva. The championship title of the open women’s doubles was bagged by Woman Leading Physical Training Instructor AGAC Wijerathna and Woman Leading Seaman MHN Herath. In the meantime, Lieutenant Commander P Dewanarayana and Woman Leading Physical Training Instructor GGS Damayanthi won the runner-up title in the same event.

In the open men’s singles, the championship was won by Sub Lieutenant HOT De Silva and Able Physical Training Instructor DMRM Bandara became the runner up. In the open women’s singles, the title was won by Woman Able Physical Training Instructor AGAC Wijerathna. Meanwhile, the second place of the event was won by Woman Leading Physical Training Instructor GGS Damayanthi.

In the over 40 doubles, Commander TR Sahabandu and Chief Petty Officer WWVAA Wickramasinghe won the championship and Commander WACB Wickramarachchi and Lieutenant Commander BMSP Banneheka became the runners-up. In the over 40 singles, the championship was won by Chief Petty Officer WWVAA Wickramasinghe and the runner-up position was secured by Captain LGG Karunarathna. Meanwhile, Captain HMBP Herath and Commander PG Wijewardena won the title in the over 50 doubles. The runner-up title in the same category was won by Captain MBNA Premarathna and Lieutenant Commander KGSP Wijerathna. Further, in the over 50 singles, Lieutenant Commander KGSP Wijerathna won the title and the runner-up title in the same category was won by Surgeon Commander RMTS Ranasinghe.

The Inter-command Badminton Championship, which saw intense competition and sportsmanship, drew a large number of naval personnel from across all Naval Commands.
