Eastern and Training Commands dominate as Navy Inter-Command Rugby Tournament 2025 showcases exciting encounters
The Navy Inter-Command Rugby Tournament 2025, worked off from 23 to 25 Jul at the SLNS Gemunu Rugby Grounds in Welisara, wrapped up in spectacular fashion, delivering intense matches and crowning champions. The Eastern Naval Command claimed the men’s title in a nail-biting final, while the Training Command dominated the women’s segment, capping off three days of thrilling rugby action.
In a hard-fought battle, the Eastern Naval Command narrowly defeated the Training Command 07-05 to lift the trophy. The Training Command settled for runners-up, while the Western Naval Command secured third place.
Meanwhile, the Training Command women’s team overpowered the Northern Naval Command 10-05 to clinch the championship. Accordingly, the Northern Naval Command took second place, with the North Central Naval Command finishing third.
Additionally, the North Central Naval Command showed grit and determination to win the Shield Championship, while the Northwestern Naval Command triumphed in the Bowl Championship.
Individual accolades were awarded to Lieutenant KVTN Dharmadasa of the Eastern Naval Command as the Best Player of the Tournament and Woman Recruit HKP Karunathilaka of the Northern Naval Command as the Best Player (Woman).
The closing ceremony of the tournament was graced by the Deputy Chief of Staff cum Commander Western Naval Area and Commandant Volunteer Naval Force, Rear Admiral Chandima Silva, as the Chief Guest. Senior officers, including the Director General Operations and Director Sports along with officers and sailors were present on the occasion.
