Sri Lanka Navy launched a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation last night in search of a sunken Indian fishing boat and its fishermen, in Sri Lankan waters about 8 nautical miles (15 km) within the IMBL northwest of Delft Island, following a resisting arrest incident took place in the dark hours on 18th January 2021.

Navy rescues a dinghy stranded at sea
Sri Lanka Navy, with the mediation of its Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Colombo), sprang into action to rescue a dinghy with 02 fishermen swept away to the Indian waters, on 15th January 2021. The dinghy that departed Silawathura for fishing practices had faced this distress due to a failure in its outboard motor (OBM).

Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe appointed as Chief of Staff of the Navy
His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa the President and Commander-in- Chief of Armed Forces of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka appointed Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, with effect from 15th January 2021. Accordingly, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, officially handed over the letter of appointment to Rear Admiral Weerasinghe today (15th January) and expressed his best wishes to carry out entrusted duties in the new appointment.

Navy brought ashore a distressed fishing trawler
Sri Lanka Navy, in cooperation with Indian High Commission in Colombo, brought ashore a fishing trawler drifted to the Indian waters along with 02 fishermen aboard, on 13th January 2021. The trawler which left for fishing from Gurunagar, Jaffna had carried away towards Indian seas, having gone into an engine failure.

Commander of the Navy embarks on visit to Southeastern Naval Command
Embarking on a visit to Southeastern Naval Command, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne called at several naval establishments and deployments of the Command on 09th and 10th January 2021. The visit which happened to be his first official stopover at the Southeastern Naval Command, upon assuming office as Commander of the Navy, was also joined by the President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne.

Over 8700kg of smuggled dried turmeric seized in northwestern seas
A special operation carried out by the Navy in dark hours on 08th January 2021 in the northwestern seas of the island resulted in the seizure of about 8769kg of dried turmeric, attempted to be smuggled into the island and apprehension of 12 Indian nationals. Meanwhile, the seized consignment of turmeric along with Indian nationals was brought ashore on 09th January for onward investigations.

An organization named ‘Men in Whites’, comprising ex-Navy officers provided t-shirts, made of yarn produced by recycled plastic, to differently abled Navy war veterans, during a simple ceremony held at the Navy Headquarters on 31st December 2020. Accordingly, the special apparel was symbolically handed over to Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne by Commander (Retd) Hiran Zoyza and and Lieutenant (Retd), representing ‘Men in Whites.

Another Reverse Osmosis plant vested with the public in Ambalantota
Yet another Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, built as a social responsibility initiative of the Sri Lanka Navy, vested with the public at Siyambalakote in Ambalantota on 03rd January 2021. A special operation carried out by the Navy in the seas off Negombo today (04th January 2021) led to the apprehension of 04 suspects with over 100kg of Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE) and about 80kg of Hashish and seizure of a multiday fishing trawler used to transfer the narcotic substances.

Navy-built 800th RO plant declared open at Ruwanwelisaya
As yet another extension of Navy’s Social Responsibility initiatives, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne today (26th December 2020) declared open the 800th Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, set up utilizing the manpower and technology enabled by the Navy and capital made available by Naval Social Responsibility Fund, at Ruwanwelisaya, in Anuradhapura.

Chaithya enshrining ashes of late Most Ven. Gnanadeepa Thero of Denmark vested with devotees for veneration
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne today (26th December 2020) attended a spiritual ceremony in which he vested a Chaithya built at Ethdalagala Aranya Senasana in Meegalewa, Anuradhapura enshrining ashes of late Most Ven. Gnanadeepa Thero of Denmark, for the veneration of Buddhist devotees. The construction work of this Chaithya was carried out with manpower and funds made available by Sri Lanka Navy.
