Naval engineer breaks new ground with chartered title through Directorate of Naval Design

Lieutenant Commander Daham Fonseka has become the first Engineer Officer in the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) to obtain Chartered Engineer status, following training through the Directorate of Naval Design (DND).

The induction and graduation ceremony in this regard was held in the month of July 2026 at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The achievement follows training through the DND, which has been recognised by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) as an authorised training establishment for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering disciplines.

The Directorate has established a structured training programme to enhance the professional competence of Navy Engineer Officers in line with IESL standards. The initiative supports SLN’s NAVSTRAT-2030 vision of investing in human capital, technology and innovation.
