Navy builds hope with 35 transitional houses for families displaced by Cyclone Ditwah

Thirty-five (35) transitional homes built with the able manpower contribution of the Navy were handed over to displaced families at the Unique View village in Nuwara Eliya today, 5 August 2026, following the displacement caused by the Cyclone Ditwah.

The houses were handed over during a ceremony held near the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council Grounds, presided over by the Nuwara Eliya District Secretary, Ms. Thushari Tennakoon.

The project was completed within 75 days with manpower enabled by around 100 naval personnel. It was undertaken to provide safe and dignified temporary accommodation for families affected by the disaster. Funding for the project was provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNICEF and the Government of Sri Lanka.

The project reflects the Sri Lanka Navy's continued support for disaster recovery efforts through its engineering capability and manpower, contributing to the restoration of living standards for communities affected by natural disasters.

The ceremony was attended by the Additional District Secretary of Nuwara Eliya, Ms. Shalika Lindakumbura the Divisional Secretary, Mr. Lahiru Kalugampitiya, the Mayor, Mr. Upali Wanigasekara, government officials, the Commanding Officer SLNS Shilpa, Captain Hemantha Ranasinghe and a group of naval personnel.
