Navy Commander commends civilians for their rescue support

The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando commended civilians in Angulana who helped rescue 11 naval personnel after a Navy’s Fast Attack Craft P 4447 ran into distress off the coast on 15 August 2026.

The Navy Chief presented letters of appreciation to 14 civilians at the Western Naval Command Headquarters in Colombo today, 18 August, recognising their role in the rescue operation.

Vice Admiral Fernando expressed the Navy’s gratitude and appreciation for what he described as a significant act of civic responsibility and humanitarian intervention. He said their prompt response during a critical situation had helped ensure the success of the rescue operation and provided an example of public solidarity and humanitarian assistance.

The Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Jagath Kumara, along with senior and junior naval officers from the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command also attended the event.
