22 Aug 2026

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a first aid training programme for members of the fishing community at the Valachchenai Fisheries Harbour in Batticaloa on 21 August 2026.

The event was conducted as part of a joint initiative with the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of the Commander, Eastern Naval Area, with medical personnel from the command providing training support. The Assistant Director of Fisheries Office in Valachchenai and the management of the Valachchenai Fisheries Harbour also contributed to organising the programme.

The workshop provided fishermen with theoretical and practical training on basic life support, mental wellbeing, and first aid for emergencies at sea. Participants were taught how to provide initial medical assistance to an injured or ill person and manage an emergency until the patient could reach shore or receive professional medical care. Certificates were also awarded to the participating fishermen to recognise their completion of the first-aid training programme.
