Navy rallies to battle deadly dengue menace in island-wide national mission
In an effort to combat the deadly menace of dengue, the Sri Lanka Navy is throwing weight behind a comprehensive week-long dengue prevention campaign spanning from 5 to 12 July 2026. This vital national initiative is being executed in close collaboration with the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ Secretariat, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) and the Police Environment Protection Division.
Continuing to the second programme under the theme "Towards a Dengue-Free Colombo," a group of over 73 naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command, joined with Medical Officers of Health, members of the International Red Cross Organization, Divisional Secretariat offices, and Public Health Inspectors today (06 Jul 26).
As part of this programme, seventy-three (73) locations in the areas of Narahenpita, Mahara, Wattala, Mattakkuliya, Borella, Ethulkotte, and Panadura were inspected, during which one thousand six hundred and fifty-one (1,651) dengue mosquito breeding sites were identified. Furthermore, Two hundred and twenty-eight (228) awareness programmes regarding dengue control were carried out under this initiative.
In parallel with the efforts, all Naval Commands have simultaneously mobilised resources to execute numerous dengue control programmes. These events focus on conducting environmental inspections to identify and eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds. Furthermore, the Navy has implemented internal cleanliness events across naval premises, ensuring the naval bases remain dengue-free zones.
