31 Oct 2026

The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, declared open a newly established Mini-Theatre and a renovated yoga space at the Naval Dockyard in Trincomalee on 31 October 2026.

These facilities were enabled as part of ongoing efforts to expand welfare facilities for naval personnel. The new air-conditioned Mini-Theatre, capable of accommodating 60 personnel, was established by converting an existing building within the Naval Dockyard.

Meanwhile, the modernised Yoga Space is located at the Coral Cove beach area, belonging to the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA). Following the inauguration, the Navy Commander observed a yoga session and addressed the participating personnel to encourage their involvement in physical and mental wellbeing activities.

Under a concept by Captain Saman Ratnayake, Commanding Officer SLN Dockyard, facilities including the 'ND Art Corner,' 'ND Café,' a ‘Juice Bar’ and the 'Dockyard Laundry' have been established within the Naval Dockyard. The Navy Commander, who visited the ‘ND Art Corner’ adjoining the new Mini-Theatre, also presented awards to the winners selected from paintings by naval personnel.

The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy and Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage; Commander Eastern Naval Area designate, Rear Admiral Varuna Ferdinandusz; Deputy Area Commander Eastern Naval Area, Commodore Chaminda Gunarathna; Commandant NMA, Commodore Nalinda Dissanayake; flag rank officers; Commanding Officer SLN Dockyard, Captain Saman Rathnayake; and a group of naval personnel from the Eastern Naval Command were present on this occasion.
