Japanese Ambassador visits Navy-built transitional shelter site in Nuwara Eliya

H.E. Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, visited the 'Unique View' village in Nuwara Eliya on 18 September 2026, to inspect a transitional shelter site built with the manpower of the Sri Lanka Navy for families displaced by the 'Ditwah' disaster. Rear Admiral Harsha De Silva, Commander Western Naval Area, attended the occasion on behalf of the Navy Commander.

The housing project, funded by the Government of Japan, International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the Sri Lanka Government, was completed swiftly by the Navy and handed over to 35 displaced families on 5 August. Further, the project is being delivered as part of the ‘Emergence Grant Response to the Cyclone Disaster in Sri Lanka’.

During the visit, the Japanese Ambassador also presented shelter repair toolkits and bedding kits to the new shelter owners.Ms. Kristin Parco, Chief of Mission of IOM in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Hon. Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Mr. KG Dharmathilaka, Additional Secretary (Disaster Management), Ministry of Defence and Ms RADTN Tennakoon, District Secretary of Nuwara Eliya were also present on the occasion.
