Navy Commander hands over funeral support equipment to Naval Commands

The Sri Lanka Navy launched a welfare initiative to assist naval personnel during family bereavements, distributing essential equipment across all Naval Commands at a ceremony at Navy Headquarters today, 16 September 2026.

The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, presided over the event, symbolically handing over the welfare items to representatives of the respective commands.

Under this welfare scheme, initiated by the Welfare Directorate, the Navy distributed 48 portable marquees, 1,875 chairs, and 14 coffee machines. The equipment will allow individual Naval Commands to provide immediate logistics and welfare support to personnel during the funerals of immediate family members.

The occasion was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ravindra Tissera; Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dammika Wijewardena; Commander Northwestern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Varuna Ferdinandusz; Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Harsha De Silva; Commander Southeastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sujeewa Weerasuriya; Commander North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Indika De Silva, and Director General Services, Rear Admiral Indika Gunawardena, along with a group of senior officers and sailors from the Navy's Welfare Directorate.
