Navy assists expansion of health care facilities
Sri Lanka Navy made its contribution to launch a number of projects to expand facilities for the treatment of COVID 19 patients in the Western and Southern Provinces, in support of the government's efforts to improve the infrastructure of the health sector, in the face of ongoing pandemic situation.
Accordingly, a closed factory in Werellawatta area, Gampaha in the Western Province is being converted as an Intermediate Care Centre for COVID 19, utilizing manpower and technological expertise enabled by the Navy, commencing from 02nd May 2021. The infrastructure of the location will be developed to accommodate up to 2000 beds.
In addition, the Navy is already expanding facilities of three ward complexes at the General Hospital Gampaha to treat to patients infected with COVID 19. After these developments, the ward complex could be used as a COVID 19 treatment unit with 50 beds. Further, the facilities of two (02) ward complexes at the Base Hospital Minuwangoda are being expanded, to treat COVID 19 contracted persons in a safe environment and the ward complex is expected to turn into a COVID 19 treatment unit, facilitated with 35 beds.
Similarly, the Navy pressed into action to construct three (03) semi-permanent buildings at the Base Hospital in Wathupitiwala to establish a ward with 20 beds for COVID 19 treatment, to carry out PCR tests and provide the necessary facilities for health care workers.
Apart from that, Sri Lanka Navy established an Intermediate Care Centre for COVID 19 with 200 beds at the Boossa naval base in Galle on 04th May 2021. Moreover, the facilities of a ward complex at the Base Hospital Balapitiya will also be improved to treat individuals test positive for COVID 19, in a safe environment.
Furthermore, the Navy is geared to extend its fullest support to the health sector in numerous ways in the time to come, strengthening the government's drive to prevent the transmission of the outbreak of COVID 19.
