Commander of the Navy inspects divisions at VNF Annual Camp

Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne inspected the divisions at Volunteer Naval Force (VNF) Annual Camp held at the parade ground of SLNS Lanka in Welisara today (20th January 2022).

The VNF Annual Camp, which is conducted to help determine the level of preparedness and professionalism of VNF personnel, commenced on 02nd January. This year’s event drew to a close after the inspection of divisions by Commander of the Navy, ceremonial parade and a colourful cultural display.

Commander of the Navy said that Volunteer Naval Force, which was established on 09th January 1952 with 24 officers and 121 sailors, has now become a force prepared to fulfil national security and development needs. He also appreciated the role of the VNF in becoming a force that is constantly ready to provide expertise and manpower for national requirement as well as emergencies and disasters. Adding more, Commander of the Navy recalled VNF personnel who sacrificed their lives and limbs for peace and territorial integrity of the motherland, those went missing in action and paid his gratitude to their family members for their continued support.

While appreciating the pioneering contribution made by the Volunteer Naval Force in collaboration with the Regular Naval Force, in fulfilling the nation-building tasks assigned to the Navy, Commander of the Navy also appreciated VNF’s contribution during COVID-19 pandemic control efforts. Besides, he also mentioned that VNF athletes had been able to bring credit to the Navy as well as the country by dominating national and international arena in sports. Commander of the Navy also went on to say that VNF Annual Camp would be helpful to bring together the experience in civilian setup and social norms to the naval setup through VNF officers and to enhance training and understanding of the customs and traditions of the Navy. This annual event would also help mould disciplined and efficient men for the Navy, he ultimately added.

The proceedings of the event were held adhering to COVID-19 protocols to prevent possibilities of transmission of the pandemic. Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral YN Jayarathne, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy and Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Upul De Silva, Commandant Volunteer Naval Force, Rear Admiral Senake Senavirathne, Director Generals, flag rank officers, Commanding Officer Volunteer Naval Force, officers and sailors attached to the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command were present on this occasion.
