Navy launches project to make handicrafts

Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne today (12th August 2022) at the Navy Headquarters inspected several souvenirs produced by the Naval Boat Building Yard in Welisara, as part of its handcrafting-project. The project was initiated with the involvement of naval personnel talented in handcrafting, to make souvenirs using eco-friendly materials for the use of the Navy.

Following an idea mooted by Commander of the Navy, the venture began as a pilot project at the Naval Boat Building Yard in Welisara in the month of April this year. Accordingly, the hand-made souvenirs, produced from this project, will be presented to guests and delegates on special occasions and courtesy calls.

Under the supervision of Director General Engineering, Rear Admiral Ravi Ranasinghe the project is being carried out in Welisara, using eco-friendly materials such as coconut shells, timber and bamboo sticks to craft these items.

Arrangements are also in place to issue these handicrafts in due course, for the needs of ships and establishments as well as for the various needs of naval personnel, through Naval Welfare.

Further, presenting these souvenirs to visiting delegates and diplomatic corps would help promote local handicrafts and tourist attraction to such creations.
