Three (03) virtuous naval personnel commended by Commander of the Navy

Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne recognized virtues of 03 naval personnel by awarding them with Letters of Commendation at the Naval Headquarters today (28th October 2022). The naval personnel has turned down bribes offered to drop charges on accused who involved in blast fishing and apprehended those 03 with a dinghy and 02 other individuals who offered a bounty for the release of their associates.

In a coordinated operation carried out by SLNS Ranweli and SLNS Walagamba in the Eastern Naval Command using craft of Special Boat Squadron a dinghy was seized with 03 persons for engaging in blast fishing off Jinnapuram, Pulmoddai on the evening of 26th October 2022.

On this occasion, 02 more individuals has approached the naval personnel engaged in this special operation and offered a sum of Rs. 100,000 for the release of their allies. Turning down the bribe, the naval personnel apprehended those 02 persons and the dinghy they arrived in.

Subsequently, the Navy handed over the 05 suspects, 02 dinghies and fishing gear to the Fisheries Inspector of Kuchchaveli and Rs. 100,000 to the Pulmoddai Police for onward legal action.

Commander of the Navy heaped praise on this fine gesture of the sailors, for their honesty, devotion to the duty and bravery, disregarding any personal gain. Fittingly, he awarded Letters of Commendation to Master Chief Petty Officer, HMS Kumara, Leading Seaman DPGAN Jayasena and Able Seaman SDDLT Dissanayake who prevented an illegal act, while up-keeping the dignity of the noble service.
